Learning Technical and Interactivity Skills
The internship also provided opportunities for me to improve my technical skills. Most useful to my education at Chimney was shadowing the head editor and assisting in multiple major projects, including an ad for Bulova Watches and a feature length Hallmark Film. Mastering Time Management My internship required that I work an 8-hour day, 4 days a week. Evenings included attending Baylor classes two days a week, taught by Baylor faculty. Interns were still considered Baylor “students” who completed courses requiring extensive reading and writing assignments, major projects, and exams. The courses included:

Baylor in New York Internship ProgramDuring my last semester at Baylor, I was selected to participate in the Baylor in New York program, a program for Film & Digital Media students to learn alongside professionals working in the field. Students in this program are required to find their own internships and to complete 12 hours of coursework while working at their internship during their semester in New York City. The company, The Chimney Group, who took me on as an intern, is the largest independent production company in the world. Their New York office primarily focuses on post-production, having several award- winning colorists and editors in house. My job was to help them organize projects, assist their client meetings, and to shadow the head editor and assist with any task he needed me to.
Acclimating to NYC and My Internship
My internship in New York City provided a unique learning experience, not only in the area of film & digital media, but also in acclimating to a new environment. Acclimating to living in a “big city,” one that I had never before visited, included learning how to navigate the boroughs via the subway, how to adjust to sub-freezing temperatures, and how to live with new roommates in an apartment located in Queens. These were important lessons because my first days on the job I was tasked with making deliveries to clients all over the city, meaning that I had to learn how to navigate my routes efficiently and safely. My internship work also required acclimating to several new situations. Within a few weeks of starting my internship, the company where I began interning, called Postal, merged with a much larger company, the Chimney Group. As the “new kid on the block,” I was tasked with helping move all of the equipment from one building to another. Eventually, I was required to transition to an entirely different work environment, with new people, new responsibilities, and a new office dynamic. From this unforeseen move I learned important lessons about the film and digital media industry--flexibility and adaptability are required for businesses like these to survive and to thrive. |

Bulova AdFor this project, I organized the raw footage within Adobe Premiere in order to simplify and expedite the editing process for the head editor.

Hallmark's True Love BloomsContributing to my first feature-length film, True Love Blooms, taught me the importance of checking for detail in creating effective professional finished products. My job was to look for any mistakes that our editor or colorist may have made. I found a significant coloring error in the film, which alerted the colorist to correct the error before the film’s release. As a result, he was grateful for my strict attention to detail.

Through my connections at Chimney, I had the opportunity to be the on-set editor for Stetson for a few days while also doing my internship. The production team gave me the footage as they shot, and I organized the footage and created rough cuts of the spots. I created about 9 different spots ranging from "how-to" videos to demos to ads. The entire process took 3 days. I especially enjoyed being on a live set doing professional work.
